Introduction

Learn about the recent updates to financial requirements for study permit applicants in Canada, effective January 1, 2024. These changes are designed to reflect updated cost-of-living standards and will be annually adjusted based on Statistics Canada’s low-income cut-off.

Required Documents

To apply for a study permit, you must gather the following documents:

  1. Proof of Acceptance
    • Obtain a letter of acceptance (LOA) from your school, to be submitted with your study permit application.
  2. Attestation Letter from Province/Territory

    • Starting January 22, 2024, most students need an attestation letter from the province or territory where they plan to study. Learn how to obtain it and be aware of exemptions.

  3. Proof of Identity
    • Submit a valid passport or travel document, along with recent passport-size photos.
  4. Proof of Financial Support
    • Demonstrate your ability to support yourself and family members with various acceptable proofs, such as a Canadian bank account, Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC), or proof of funding.

Specific Requirements and Considerations

Conditional Acceptance and Prerequisite Courses

  • If conditionally accepted, complete prerequisite courses before starting the main study program.
  • Study permit duration will be the length of prerequisite courses plus 1 year.

Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ)

  • Students planning to study in Quebec for over 6 months need an attestation of issuance of CAQ from the Government of Quebec.

Letter of Explanation

  • Include a letter explaining your reasons for studying in Canada and your understanding of student responsibilities.

Medical Exam

  • A medical exam may be required for stays over 6 months or specific situations.

Custodian Declaration (Minor Children)

  • If a custodian is needed for a minor, submit the Custodianship Declaration form, duly notarized.

Other Documents

  • Check specific visa office instructions for your country and fulfill local requirements.
  • Prove immigration status if not in your home country.
  • Obtain a re-entry permit if required by your passport/travel document.
